In this chapter, you'll learn how to create a simple animation using basic motion and looks blocks. Whether you're using ScratchJr on a tablet, mobile device, or PC, the process is playful and easy to follow.
Simple animations help children understand sequencing, timing, and visual storytelling. They're perfect for classroom projects, civic awareness campaigns, or just having fun with digital creativity.
What Is a Simple Animation?
A simple animation in ScratchJr is a short sequence where a character performs one or more actions—like moving across the screen, changing size, or saying something. These animations are built using Motion Blocks, Looks Blocks, and Control Blocks.
1. Start a New Project
- Open ScratchJr on your device.
- Tap the plus sign (+) to create a new project.
- A blank stage will appear with a default cat character.
2. Add a Character and Background
- Tap the blue character button to choose a new character.
- Tap the landscape icon to select a background.
3. Add Motion Blocks
- Select your character.
- Add a trigger block like the green flag or tap block at the beginning.
- Drag a blue motion block like "Move Right" or "Jump" to the coding area.
4. Add Looks Blocks
- Drag a purple looks block like "Say Hello" or "Disappear".
- Place it after a motion block to make your character speak or react.
5. Add Control Blocks
- Use a wait block to pause between actions.
- Use a repeat block to loop movements.
6. Test and Refine
- Tap the green flag to run your animation.
- Watch your character move, speak, and react.
- Adjust blocks to improve timing or add new actions.
