Creating and Saving Your First ScratchJr Project

Welcome to the world of ScratchJr—a playful programming environment designed especially for young learners. In this chapter, we'll explore how to start your very first project, give it a name, and understand how ScratchJr keeps your work safe.

Whether you're animating a story, designing a game, or building a civic awareness scene, every great ScratchJr journey begins with a single tap. ScratchJr helps children learn to think creatively, reason logically, and express themselves visually.

1. Open ScratchJr

  • Tap the ScratchJr app on your tablet or computer.
  • Start a new project by clicking the Home icon.
  • Tap the plus (+) button.

2. Create a New Project

On the home screen, tap the plus sign (+) to start a new project. This opens a blank stage with a default character—a friendly orange cat.

3. Name Your Project

Tap the yellow name bar at the top of the screen. A keyboard will appear. Type a name for your project such as "My First Animation" or "Rainy Day Story". Then tap the checkmark to save the name.

4. Begin Creating

  • Add characters by tapping the blue character button.
  • Choose a background using the landscape icon.
  • Drag coding blocks to make your characters move, speak, or react.

5. Saving Your Project

  • ScratchJr saves your work automatically.
  • Tap the Home button.
  • Your project will appear in the library with its name and preview image.
